Book Lovers Night Out

Tonight we had four members of our book club that attended the Book Lovers Night Out event at the local wine shop.  This was an event put on by our public library and several different book clubs were invited to share about their group.  I think there were 5 different clubs present.

Once we got started, a representative from each group took a few minutes to tell about how long they have been meeting, what they read, how they make their selections, etc.  Some shared their best book for discussion or other favorites.  Some of these that we wrote down to look into reading were:  We Need to Talk About Kevin, The Weight of Silence, The Hunger Games, Day After Night, and Wesley the Owl.

It was so interesting to hear about how each group is run.  As you can see in these pictures, there were ladies of all ages there tonight!
The lady (who appears to be at a table by helself (all of her friends had just happened to but up at the time!) was 100!  How neat was that for her to still be a participant in the book club and to have joined us!  I hope to be as active as her in body and soul when I am 100! Her group has been meeting since 1980.  They sign up about a year in advance for the books and it usually only ends up that you host every 2 years.  They each give a report on books they have read during the last month at each meeting.  One member commented that she liked how she hears about different genres of books that she doesn't read herself from the other members.  They have some who like to read horror and some who read mysteries etc.

One of the groups named themselves the Book GALS (Glen*** Area Literary Society)  How clever!  In this group, the hostess decides what the book is going to be for the upcoming selection and someone else is the host for that book.  This book group also collects $3 at each meeting and at the end of the year donates it to a favorite charity.  This past year they bought books for all of the 1st graders at the elementary.

Other interesting info:
Some groups stated that they choose the hostess alphabetically.
Some groups serve dinner, some finger foods, and some just cookies.
One group has chosen an author and every member reads a different book by the same person.
One group has someone write and share a synopsis of the meeting and any recipes from the night.

Tonight in our little group of four, we talked about different ways to choose the hostess, holding our gatherings in a different location other than a home, and how fun the synopsis could be- and helpful!  We could share the good wines that we have!

Looking forward to our next meeting on the 28th!  Hope to see you at Katie's!
